This regular, full-time administration position will work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with evening and weekend hours as necessary.

Position Summary

Plan, execute and assess the mission of the College as it relates to Nursing and Allied Health programs. Responsible for ensuring quality, viable, and cost-effective programs. Serve as the Director, Nursing.

Kellogg Community College is located in Battle Creek, Michigan, a community of approximately 54,000 people. Leisure activities, natural resources and learning opportunities provide a foundation for residents. Located along the I-94 interstate, Battle Creek is within 30 minutes of Kalamazoo, 60 minutes of Lansing and Grand Rapids and within three hours of Detroit, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Physical Demands

The job responsibilities are performed in an office area and presentation venues. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as independent mobility between work areas, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 – 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Earned Master of Nursing degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
2. Current unencumbered RN License in the State of Michigan.
3. Technical knowledge and study in Higher Education Leadership.
4. Three to five (3-5) years of experience as a full-time teaching faculty member with program leadership or coordination responsibilities.
5. Experience with department leadership/management of a department.
6. Experience with grant writing and management.
7. Educational training or experience in business and financial management.

Preferred but not Required

1. Community College teaching experience.
2. Doctorate of Nursing Practice or other earned Doctorate (EdD or PhD) from an accredited college or university.
3. Supervisory experience in a unionized environment.
4. Strong communication and collaboration skills.
5. Ability to strategically think, problem solve, take risks, make and communicate difficult decisions.
6. Ability to conduct research, analyze data, forecast, develop and implement improvement strategies.

Proposed Salary

According to the Kellogg Community College Hay Administrative Compensation program, the 2024-2025 annual salary range for a Dean 1 position, $97,392 to $121,740 to start.

Job Duties

Essential Function: Institutional Planning & Development

Description

• Advance college initiatives related to the institutional mission and strategic plan through participation on college leadership committees that are intended to drive decision-making and related change including, President’s Council, Academic Cabinet, Administration/Finance Cabinet, Facilities Design Team, Enrollment Management Committee, Guided Pathways Steering Committee, and HLC Steering Committee.
• Ensure the Health Sciences Division mission and activities are aligned with the institutional mission; present to and often persuade various internal stakeholder groups on behalf of divisional interests.

Essential Function: Leadership & Supervision

Description

• Provide leadership and oversight to departments within the Instructional Division of the College: Allied Health and Nursing.
• Lead administrators and faculty in conducting ongoing research, analyzing data, and developing improvement strategies.
• Serve as Director of Nursing: (Associate Degree Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, LPN to RN Advanced Placement Nursing and Nursing Assistant), manage nursing faculty, staff, and students, oversee curriculum, collaborate with academic and healthcare colleagues, attract and retain students, maintain ongoing approval by the Michigan Board of Nursing, secure national nursing accreditation and manage the departmental budget. Responsible for implementing strategy to ensure quality, viability and cost effectiveness of each program or course.
• Hire, develop, mentor, support, supervise and evaluate administrators, contracted professionals and support staff.
• Guide the hiring and evaluation of tenure-track and part-time faculty; advance recommendations for tenure.
• Serve on the administrative collective bargaining team.
• Participate on advisory committees, ensuring program curriculum is current and relevant for the workforce.

Essential Function: Students

Description

• Provide service to students; participate in student activities and recognition events, respond to student questions and concerns, address barriers to success.
• Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of referral sources for students at risk.
• Provide oversight of admission and academic policies and procedures to address student needs and foster successful completion.
• Ensure course schedules are conducive to student access.
• Confirm that program informational materials for both traditional and electronic distribution are developed and maintained to support and encourage a diverse student population.

Essential Function: Fiscal Accountability

Description

• Provide oversight for divisional and departmental budgets in the Health Sciences division, including oversight of any grants.
• Lead divisional budget planning, monitor department budgets, communicate fiscal needs to the VP and CFO, and explore efficiency strategies.
• Explore and pursue grant opportunities.

Essential Function: Inter-Educational Collaborations

Description

• Develop innovative and collaborative business models for the purpose of program delivery.
• Provide vision and leadership through collaborative program execution.
• Serve as an active resource through ongoing program delivery to ensure sustainability through the ebb and flow associated with changing conditions of the collaboration.
• Ensure a system for articulation with K12 and university partners.

Essential Function: Accountability

Description

• Develop and lead a comprehensive assessment and improvement plan for the Health Sciences division that address technical and professional student learning, program effectiveness, and fiscal effectiveness.
• Engage faculty and staff in the accreditation and State Board approval processes.
• Lead the program review process; collaborate with program leaders and faculty to measure the quality, viability, and cost to student of each program.
• Monitor course and program outcomes against quality measures and expected levels of achievement, and student and employer expectations.
• Develop, implement, and assess improvement strategies intended to address access, enrollment, student success (retention/completion), cost efficiency, and Perkins Core Performance Indicators. Ensure Carl D. Perkins Grant-eligible programs complete the Program Review for Occupational Education (PROE) process.
• Secure program-specific accreditation through The Accreditation Commissions for Education in Nursing (A.C.E.N.) and maintain ongoing Michigan State Board of Nursing approval for Practical Nursing, Associate Degree Nursing and LPN to RN Advanced Placement Nursing Programs.
• Oversee ongoing Michigan State Board of Nursing approval for Practical Nursing, Associate Degree Nursing and LPN to RN Advanced Placement Nursing Programs.
• Ensure ongoing Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs approval for the Nursing Assistant Training Program which is offered on four campuses across three counties.
• Maintain membership on the Michigan Administrative Deans Council (MODAC), collaborate with other deans and the State of Michigan-Workforce Development Agency-Community College Services Unit on Perkins related issues.

Essential Function: State, Regional, and Local Planning and Development

Description

• Engage with employers and community leaders to assess educational needs that align with workforce demand for healthcare careers.
• Establish partnerships to develop and deliver accessible and timely programs.
• Ensure the College’s Health Sciences Division mission and activities are aligned with the state, regional and community missions; present to and often persuade various external stakeholder groups on behalf of KCC and workforce/occupational divisional interests.
• Represent the college and the region on various local and regional activities and initiatives.
• Upon request of community leadership, provide oversight of community-enrichment programs that usually include supervision of program administrator/manager.
• Work in collaboration with the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) on state-wide community college interests.
