Job Summary
The Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students reports to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs for the supervision, coordination, and management of a wide array of student co-curricular and support services at Kutztown University. Functions of the position will include: formulation of strategic and operational planning documents, budget preparation and oversight, supervision and evaluation of staff within assigned units , and serving the University as the Dean of Students as primary liaison to campus, local, and state law enforcement and governmental agencies on student related matters, provide advocacy as well as problem solving as they relate to students, and/or other internal/external constituencies to build a culture of respect. This position will also provide leadership and oversight for the departments of Student Involvement Services, Associate Dean for Students (Student Conduct), Student Assistance Coordinator, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health and Wellness Center( including Health Promotions and Alcohol and Other Drug programs), Diversity and Inclusion units (Multicultural Center, Women’s Center, GLBTQ Resource Center), Community Outreach Center, Greek Life, Veterans Services, New Student Orientation, Commuter Student Services, and KU Radio.

Specifically, the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students will:

  • Collaborate with staff and faculty to support student success, persistence and graduation efforts.
  • Collaborate with Admissions and Financial Aid to support successful new student recruitment
  • Provide leadership and supervise the Associate Dean of Students for the implementation of the University student conduct system as outlined in the Student handbook and in accordance with Board of Governors policy and state law including data presentation and analysis.
  • Promote good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders on behalf of students that result in beneficial management of conflict through leadership of the Kutztown University Behavioral Intervention Team.
  • Manage departmental budget and the operational budgets of reporting units.
  • Serve as university point person in the area of Town/Gown relations through program initiation, crisis management and liaison with various campus/community groups that traverse traditional divisional lines.
  • Represent Kutztown University and the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs as campus designee to various external agencies.
  • Provide oversight and leadership for the production of the University Commencements.
  • Provide leadership in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Students for the production of the student handbook (The Key) consistent with Board of Governors policy and deliver the document to students in a manner that is functional and in multiple media that meet the needs of a diverse student body.
  • In collaboration with Provost, academic Deans and faculty address student conduct in the classroom, incidents of undergraduate academic integrity.
  • Assist the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs in the formulation of, University and Division goals, objectives, policies and procedures concerning students and coordinate the unit accomplishments reports of strategic initiatives.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to the Office of Student Involvement Services
  • Serve as the advisor to the Student Government Board
  • Collaborate with faculty/staff on issues related to the First Amendment
  • Serve as the point of contact for student complaints
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs and/or the President of the University.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree required
  • Ten years of experience in higher education with at least five years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience within a public university or college setting.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating collaborative relationships with and providing effective leadership.
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Expertise working with issues related to the First Amendment
  • Demonstrated experience with supervising multiple professional staff
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Student Conduct
  • Experience working in a collective bargaining environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Participation in Student Success team/task force
