Position Overview:
The Senior Manager for Membership at the Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) provides strategic vision, oversight, and management for all activities of J-WEL that relate to members and J-WEL’s overall membership model. The Senior Manager leads membership development (which may include fostering the early stage development of projects), recruits new members, maintains member relationships and monitors member progress. The Senior Manager, Membership also manages the tracking and billing associated with membership and oversees all membership activities. The Senior Manager, Membership works under the guidance of the J-WEL Acting Director, Operations & Strategy.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
New Member Development and Onboarding (55%)
Member Recruitment
- Works independently to develop, refine and implement targeted member recruitment model to increase membership leads across all stages of the sales pipeline.
- Works closely with Communications Manager to design, execute and measure the effectiveness of membership marketing materials and messages.
- Proactively engages with membership prospects and track their activities to inform them of the value of J-WEL membership.
- Arranges all aspects of customized prospect, special guest, and delegation visits, including content and logistics.
- Develops the processes and data inputs for internal CRM and refines leads process to ensure an increased pipeline and effective, timely sales cycle.
- Coordinates vetting of all potential new members before final contract signing.
- Manages business development activities and budget, equipping J-WEL leadership and advisors with effective communications and briefs on prospective leads.
- Communicates and represents the work of J-WEL membership, and J-WEL overall, externally (relevant conferences, gatherings, etc.) and within MIT.
- Shepherds new members and initiates relevant projects/connections to ensure achievement of J-WEL’s overall mission, including by working towards overall financial sustainability for membership.
New Member Onboarding
- Manages end-to-end contracting process with incoming members.
- Leads effective onboarding process for all new members including communications and briefing for J-WEL team, advisors and the Faculty Advisory Committee with briefs on the member’s steering committee, key fact and motivations for joining with potential areas for engagement.
- Incorporates new learnings from the member recruitment process into the overall sales process and documents and implements best practices.
Member Experience: Retention and Program Design (45%)
Member Retention
- Oversees the design and delivery of activities offered via J-WEL membership.
- Tracks membership communications, milestones, etc. in a shared database, ensuring that relevant J-WEL and other staff are apprised of relevant developments in member relations.
- Coordinates and facilitates interactions across J-WEL as well as Open Learning and MIT for integration and synergy in research, outreach, and teaching, as feasible.
- Facilitates interactions between members, MIT faculty, and other MIT staff as relevant for activities and projects.
- Works with relevant units within Open Learning (finance, legal, senior leadership) and MIT (eg ICC, IAC, TLO, OGC, Donor Relations) to execute strategic planning, reporting, communication, and compliance.
- Designs tools, presentations and other communication materials to best synthesize team progress and allow for effective exchange of the information to prospects. Where needed will engage vendors to create effective communications materials.
- Collaborates on case studies of MIT J-WEL member strategies, performance, and impact.
Member Program Design
- Collaborates with J-WEL team in the execution of in-person and online events providing the member voice and perspective to program agenda design; support outreach and member attendance.
- Identifies and recommends new strategic interventions or member offerings and creates a roadmap/menu of programs and policies for members.
- Participates in weekly J-WEL management and staff team meetings, including by providing input and analysis to shape strategies and performance across J-WEL, and by raising and helping to address opportunities and challenges facing J-WEL.
- Contribute to initiatives and strategies to deliver such outputs as academic papers, reports, case studies, web materials, videos, and audio content to share and promote the work of J-WEL.
- Monitors competitive programs or organizations and incorporates best practices from outside the Institute into the program and proactively alerts J-WEL leadership team to new developments in the industry.
- Proposes the design and implementation plan of new initiatives such as member-led symposia or workshops.
- Develops new program proposals and supports new model development by conducting appropriate market research.
- Implements the piloting of new programs and models, monitors impact, and advises on effectiveness of the pilot programs and models.
- Coordinates with J-WEL team and faculty with regard to new initiatives.
- Evaluates, recommends, and implements enhancements and changes to initiatives.
- Additional responsibilities as required and feasible.
Supervision Received:
The Senior Manager is supervised by the J-WEL Acting Director, Operations & Strategy.
Qualifications & Skills:
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience.
- Proven ability to achieve community and revenue goals.
- Evidence of wide-ranging critical, strategic, and innovative thinking.
- Proven ability to move strategy to operations and detailed execution, including by identifying and addressing continuous improvement requirements.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a history of building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to craft effective solutions that meet disparate needs.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Track record of personal effectiveness in organizing and managing amid complexity, bringing a focus on goals and outcomes to every task.
- Self-starter capabilities that enable successful operation in a dynamic, fast-paced, highly-collaborative, and sometimes ambiguous environment.
- Positive mindset that views challenges with enthusiasm.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduate degree in education, science, engineering, or a related area.
- 10+ years’ experience in managing projects or programs.
- Deep knowledge of topics in global higher education and experience in leading higher education programs.
- Deep knowledge of the MIT educational pedagogy and approach, such as certification from the Teaching & Learning Lab and attainment of an Executive Certificate in Management and Leadership from Sloan School of Management.
- Deep familiarity with the MIT landscape.
- Relevant experience including membership or business development, resource development, writing, and community building.
- Quantitative and qualitative analysis skills are a plus.
Compensation
Salary range: $100,000 – $115,000, final salary determined by MIT’s compensation team based on the skills and experience of the person hired.
Remote Work
Subject to change, this work may, at present, be performed in a hybrid model of at least two days per week in the office and no more than three days per week remote. During key periods, more frequent in-person work may be required.
Travel
This role will require periodic international travel for periods of time up to, and possibly exceeding, one week at a time.
