Meharry Medical College seeks a mission-oriented, inspiring, innovative, academic physician leader to serve as the new Chair of Psychiatry. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Meharry Medical College is the nation’s largest private, historically black academic health sciences center and has trained thousands of health care professionals. The Department of Psychiatry is committed to eliminating disparities in the understanding of and care for those suffering from mental disorders from all backgrounds as well as providing quality, cutting edge ambulatory and inpatient care for those with substance use disorders. The department collaborates with other specialties within the College, the greater academic health sciences community in Tennessee, and nationally. Meharry’s is nationally recognized for its commitment to developing a broad and diverse healthcare workforce, cutting edge research in cardiometabolic diseases, genomics and infectious disease, solving health and clinical dilemmas through data analytics and health policy analysis, and delivering care to everyone especially the medical underserved. This legacy has resulted in noteworthy philanthropic gifts during the past two years that have allowed the College to launch exciting new programs and grow its educational and scientific footprint.
Reporting to Sonja Harris-Haywood, MD, MS, MA, Dean of the Meharry School of Medicine, the Chair of Psychiatry will lead a robust department that includes faculty, staff, researchers, students, the Elam Mental Health Center, and the Residency Program. As an innovator, the Chair will identify and develop new clinical programs consistent with national best practices and care models, patient and community need, and financial feasibility. The Chair will ensure continued strong relationships with the community and work collaboratively with community-based organizations, local government and other entities, on program development. As an educator and mentor, the Chair will support faculty career development and scholarship and create a culture and learning environment that supports the education programs. In addition, the Chair will work with the Program Director to help the residency training program to set and achieve near- and long-term goals and the Clerkship Program Director to advance medical education in the department of Psychiatry.
