Two consumer horticulture educator positions are available that will provide local and statewide leadership and educational programming expertise in alignment with the needs of home and community gardeners and will lead the local Extension Master Gardener Programs. One position will serve Kent and neighboring counties and the other position will serve Kalamazoo and surrounding counties.
You will identify, design, implement, and evaluate research-based educational programs that meet current and projected outreach needs related to best management practices for landscape and garden management contributing to the goals of producing healthy foods and landscapes while protecting the environment. You will be expected to be an effective communicator with teaching methods ranging from traditional in-person meetings held one-on-one or in small groups, to using different forms of synchronous and asynchronous distance learning technologies. You will be expected to develop a broad array of educational materials to include traditional news articles and bulletins, videos, infographics, etc. You will work with lawn and garden hotline volunteers to address home gardening questions from across the state and will serve as an informational resource for lawn and garden questions. You will develop entrepreneurial programs to help support the local consumer horticulture program, while providing support for AABI in determining research and programmatic needs across the state.

These positions may be eligible to utilize a flexible work environment, however, there is an expectation to work from a MSU Extension county office. The needs, responsibilities, and opportunities of an individual’s position and office location drive the ability and amount of work-location flexibility.
West Michigan Consumer Horticulture Educator
Although negotiable, there will be space available for this position to work from the Kent County MSU Extension office, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Southern Michigan Consumer Horticulture Educator
Although negotiable, there will be space available for this position to work from the Kalamazoo County MSU Extension office, located in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

- Master’s degree in horticulture, ornamental horticulture, landscape design or management, or related field.
