Description of Duties:
The SUNY Research Foundation seeks applicants for an AI Developer/Analyst within Information Technology Services at the University at Albany. The successful candidate works closely with the research community across a wide range of disciplines to deliver analytical and computational IT solutions in a complex, R1 university environment. The University recently announced a $200M Albany AI Initiative, positioning UAlbany as a leader in this groundbreaking field. Reporting to the Research Technology Manager, the AI Developer/Analyst focuses on the research needs of the Center for Emerging Artificial Intelligence Systems. They will expand the portfolio of AI services available to researchers, making UAlbany a leading academic test bed for the latest computing technology developed by IBM.

The AI Developer/Analyst is engaged in supporting AI research from pre-grant technical consultation through implementation. They provide AI analysis, design and development, and consultation and support to develop AI applications and solutions. 

The AI Developer/Analyst is intellectually curious, creative, and enjoys working with others to identify ways to utilize sophisticated technologies to solve complex problems. They are comfortable working with interdisciplinary audiences, both independently and as part of a team. This is an excellent opportunity for seasoned professionals to further evolve their expertise in an innovative field.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with faculty researchers to understand their specific requirements and assist in translating them into effective and innovative AI solutions.
  • Provide consultation on the design, development, implementation, and optimization of AI applications and solutions, catering to the diverse needs of faculty researchers across various research disciplines 
  • Work collaboratively with System Administrators and Research Analysts to troubleshoot and resolve incidents and challenges related to AI applications.
  • Proactively maintain and enhance the security posture of assigned systems and applications, adhering to ITS standards and industry best practices.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI to provide recommendations to faculty researchers on adopting new development technologies, frameworks, and methodologies to enhance research outcomes.
  • Establish and actively contribute to the implementation of AI development standards and best practices.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant AI, data science, or research experience.
  • Programming fluency in Python and one or more other programming languages such as C++, Node.js, Java or R with a deep understanding of algorithms and software development. 
  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms and frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
  • Proven understanding of data processing techniques, statistics, feature engineering, and AI model validation and training.
  • Proficiency in scalable and parallel programming in an AI context, utilizing frameworks such as CUDA, OpenACC, OpenMP, MPI, pthreads, etc.
  • Solid understanding of CPU and GPU architecture fundamentals.
  • Experience developing and implementing solutions leveraging Large Language Models such as LLaMa 2, GPT-4, and Claude 2.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A PHD from a college or University accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization, preferably in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Quantitative Social Sciences, or related STEM field.
  • Previous experience working or collaborating with academic research teams.
  • Expertise in parallelization and performance optimization of AI applications and machine learning algorithms.
  • Knowledge of relevant cloud computing platforms and associated AI services such as IBM Cloud, NVIDIA DGX Cloud, Azure, Google, AWS.
