Hiring Pay Scale: $82,000 – $90,000/year

Digital Learning (DL) is one of the six hubs in the Teaching + Learning Commons. Digital Learning’s mission is to broaden access to education by creating equitable online learning environments. We collaborate with instructors and campus units to:
  • Develop and support online courses and programs
  • Assess, research, and advance online learning
  • Promote online learning opportunities
  • Advocate for the efficacy of online learning
The incumbent joins our team of highly qualified instructional designers to advance UC San Diego’s educational mission by designing pedagogical, technology enhanced innovations using emerging technologies and creative multimedia to foster student engagement and inclusive excellence. This position is responsible for collaborating with faculty and the Digital Learning (DL) team on the design and development of online courses and programs (e.g. academic degrees, academic bridging, career advancement and enrichment). Additional responsibilities include developing research-based resources to support online teaching and learning, collaborating on the assessment of online courses, promoting inclusive online course design, and supporting digital innovations at UC San Diego.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Digital Learning and in collaboration with the DL instructional designers, this position plays a vital role in supporting the University’s online initiatives. Paramount to the success of this position are an in-depth understanding of instructional design theories and methodologies for online course design; an awareness of current trends in instructional software; experience employing creative multimedia and a variety of interactive web-based education technologies; experience with learning management systems (e.g. Canvas); a currency in best practices in inclusive online course design; and excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • This position is fully remote. Candidates must live in the United States. Working evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training (such as instructional design, educational technology, Educational multi-media or closely related discipline).
  • Experience (typically three (3) years minimum) providing support for online course design, educational media creation, and the utilization of learning technologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc. Well versed in the application of universal design for learning and digital inclusion principles.
  • Thorough knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.
  • Demonstrated experience developing an online learning experience/course throughout the entire, end-to-end design cycle, from the scoping phase to deployment and offering on a learning management system (e.g. Canvas).
  • Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and strong collaboration and negotiation skills. Demonstrated experience communicating effectively one-on-one and before large and small audiences.
  • Expertise in project management of education learning development projects. Experience simultaneously managing multiple, development projects.
  • A commitment to equity and to ensuring the success of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.
