The Opportunity
The School of Public Administration in the College of Community Innovation and Education (CCIE) is seeking to hire a 9-month assistant professor (tenure-track) or associate professor (tenured) with an emphasis in technology policy, artificial intelligence, or the application of big data analytic techniques to public policy and management questions. The school expects to hire a faculty member who will contribute to the college’s new strategic plan by “providing world-class, innovative educational experiences” and “conducting transformative, high-impact research to address society’s major challenges.” The school is seeking a candidate who will be able to integrate with and contribute to policy and management challenges evolving within Central Florida’s vibrant technology economy, including but not limited to advancements in space technology, defense systems, nanotechnology, disaster management, and urban design. Candidates with expertise in applied AI/machine learning and big data that will enhance the school’s urban science, disaster policy, and/or social policy research will be of particular interest. UCF’s School of Public Administration boasts a novel technology-oriented curriculum, a newly conceived Urban Innovation Lab, and is now recognized as the #1 ranked program in Emergency Management. The school seeks a faculty member who can contribute to these developments through teaching and research, with an interdisciplinary perspective that uniquely encompasses emergency management, policy informatics, urban and regional planning, and closely related social sciences. The selected candidate is expected to increase the school’s capacity to collaborate in research with broader UCF and CCIE initiatives such as: the Knights Digital Twin (KDT) group, the Urban Innovation Lab, interdisciplinary research teams that seek to provide virtual space to simulate agents (e.g., humans, vehicles, natural features), activities (e.g. mobility, logistics), and environments (e.g. natural, build, social). The selected candidate must be able to legally work in the United States at the time of appointment.

It offers a NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration, a Master of Nonprofit Management (the first NASPAA-accredited nonprofit program in the world), a PAB-accredited Master of Science in Urban & Regional Planning, the #1 ranked Master of Emergency and Crisis Management, a Ph.D. in Public Affairs, undergraduate public administration, nonprofit management, and emergency management degrees, a first of its kind international dual degree in Public Administration/Nonprofit Management, and various graduate and undergraduate certificate program and minors (including Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, and Urban and Regional Planning). Minimum Qualifications:

  • By time of appointment, the candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Public Administration Public Affairs, Public Policy, Urban Studies, Urban and Regional Planning, Political Science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • An active and sustainable research agenda consistent with the job announcement through publications, conference presentations, funded extramural research, or similar activities.
  • Exceptional ABD candidates will be considered, but all degree requirements must be completed by the time of appointment.

Additional qualifications for the rank of associate professor (with tenure):

  • Candidates eligible for appointment as a tenured associate professor upon hire must have a demonstrated record of research (e.g., publication in high quality journals, external funding), teaching, and service commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An active and sustained research agenda consistent with the job announcement, including a record of publishing high-quality research articles in top-tier international and national peer-reviewed (refereed) journals and submitting research proposals to external funding opportunities.
  • Evidence of working in interdisciplinary research teams
  • Evidence of partnering with and mentoring colleagues and students, through collaborative research.
  • Experience teaching in an online environment.
  • A record of strong teaching performance.
