University of Rochester

The Department of Black Studies (BLST) at the University of Rochester invites applications for tenure-track faculty whose research and teaching is particularly focused in Black Health. Ideally, candidates will critically explore health disparities, health issues and solutions, and environmental harm as it pertains to Black communities. We are especially interested in candidates who bring new interdisciplinary perspectives to examining health issues within the Black Diaspora, through the use of innovative methodological, thematic, geographic, and analytical approaches. While open to all areas of specialization, preference will be given to candidates whose work applies social scientific methods in, but not limited to,  the following areas of interests: reproductive justice and/or sexual health, dis/abilities, public health, food and/or health disparities, and health ecologies. The term of appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2025. Review of applications will begin October 28, 2024.

The University of Rochester is committed to identifying scholars doing path-breaking research on Blackness that will enhance the university’s direction in this area. Toward this end, we invite scholars who focus on health and wellness and/or analysis of health interventions or medicine among Black populations—to include communities in the U.S., Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin America, Africa, or Black communities elsewhere.Though this position is 100% in Black Studies, we are especially interested in applicants who forge cross-campus collaborations with other academic programs and community partners.
