The Department of History at the University of Utah seeks a tenure-line Assistant Professor in the modern history of China with a preference for East Asian, transnational, or global Chinese histories. The position is part of a new International and Area Studies initiative within the College of Humanities. Competitive applicants will have a demonstrated commitment to research and research-informed teaching at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The teaching load is two courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in the applicant’s areas of expertise, contributing on a rotating basis to the teaching of both halves of our two-course Asian history survey (before and after 1500), and an additional service course. History faculty have opportunities to participate in the University’s interdisciplinary initiatives in Asian and International Studies, Environmental Humanities, the Medical Humanities, Games, and Digital Humanities, among other programs. The PhD is preferred but ABD candidates are encouraged to apply. Applications are due November 1, 2026.
