Lora Bailey Appointed Provost of the University of the Virgin Islands

With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Bailey most recently served as director for research development at historically Black Virginia State University. A scholar of early childhood education, she has held academic and leadership roles with numerous universities across the United States.

Dennis Mitchell Named Dean of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine

Dr. Mitchell has taught at the Ivy League dental school for over three decades. He has made significant research contributions regarding the oral manifestations of HIV, particularly among patients from underserved populations. He also has served in senior university administrative roles since 2014, focusing on faculty advancement and development.

Ash Abebe to Lead Graduate Education at Auburn University

“I’m excited to build on the Graduate School’s strong momentum and to further the academic and scholarly work that connects our students and faculty across disciplines,” said Dr. Abebe. “This is both a challenge and an opportunity to build the data scaffolding needed to identify synergies and gaps so Auburn’s graduate education can grow in impact and reach.”

Three HBCUs Announce New Dean Appointments

Xavier Whitaker is the new vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Talladega College; Taviare Hawkins is the new dean of the School of Science at Hampton University; and Shannon Campbell is the new dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University.

Alycia Marshall Is the Seventh President of the Community College of Philadelphia

Robert N. Corley III is the New Provost of Elizabeth City State University

Dr. Corley comes to Elizabeth City State University from another HBCU, Virginia State University, where he was a special advisor to the president. Earlier, he spent more than a decade on the faculty of historically Black Tuskegee University in Alabama.

Vence L. Bonham, Jr. to Lead Genomics Research at Meharry Medical College

Bonham, former acting director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, has been named president of Meharry Medical College's Diaspora Human Genetics Institute, where scholars are currently working to build the largest African ancestry genomics research database. Bonham will also direct Meharry's Center for Bioethics, Social, and Behavioral Research.

A Pair of New Vice Presidents at Dillard University

At historically Black Dillard University in New Orleans, Darvelle Hutchins will serve as vice president of institutional advancement and Dexter Odom will serve as vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer.

Martin University President Sean Huddleston Announces Resignation

Dr. Huddleston has led Martin University in Indianapolis for the past six years. Over the course of his career, he has gained more than three decades of higher education experience, including key leadership roles with the University of Indianapolis, Framingham State University, and Grand Valley State University.

Badia Ahad Appointed Provost of Emory University

Dasha Lundy Selected to Lead Knoxville College on Its Path to Accreditation and Financial Stability

Historically Black Knoxville College in Tennessee has been unaccredited for almost three decades. As it seeks to achieve financial stability, the HBCU has selected Dasha Lundy, former chief operating officer, as its interim president.

Robert Mock Named President of Peru State College in Nebraska

Fiemu Nwariaku to Lead the Society of Black Academic Surgeons

For the past three years, Dr. Nwariaku has served as an endowed professor and chair of the department of surgery in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. Earlier, he spent over two decades on the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Lane Community College Board Issues Apology to President for Discriminatory Behavior

Following an independent investigation, the board of Lane Community College in Oregon issued a formal apology to President Stephanie Bulger for dismissing her feedback, as well as abusive and bullying behavior directed towards her by the former board chair.

Judge Rules in Favor of Florida Memorial University’s Recent Presidential Appointment

In August, eight board members of Florida Memorial University claimed they were excluded from the decision to appoint interim president William C. McCormick as the university's permanent leader. Now, a judge has tossed out the group's lawsuit, finding “Mr. McCormick's actions as full-time president, as opposed to interim president, of FMU pose no threat to irreparable injury.”

Amidst Accreditation Turmoil, Marcus Burgess Resigns as Interim President of Saint Augustine’s University

According to a statement from the SAU board of trustees, Dr. Burgess resigned for personal reasons, effective August 31. Verjanis A. Peoples, interim provost, has been selected to lead the HBCU's administrative responsibilities until further notice.
