Martin University President Sean Huddleston Announces Resignation

Sean L. Huddleston, president of Martin University in Indianapolis, will step down from his role on November 28.

On March 19, 2019, Dr. Huddleston became the fifth president and chief executive officer of Martin University, Indiana’s only predominately Black institution. Under his leadership, the university founded the National Center for Racial Equity and Inclusion, an initiative that helps local businesses and nonprofits strengthen their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Dr. Huddleston also oversaw the launch of the WORKS apprenticeship program, an urban work opportunity that allows students to work for local employers while in school, setting them up for a permanent position before graduation.

Before joining the Martin administration, Dr. Huddleston was vice president and chief equity and inclusion officer at the University of Indianapolis. With a career in higher education spanning more than 30 years, he has also served as chief officer of diversity, inclusion, and community engagement at Framingham State University in Massachusetts and assistant vice president at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.

“Dr. Huddleston has guided Martin University with integrity, courage, and vision,” said Joseph Perkins, chair of Martin’s board of trustees. “Over the past six years, he has worked tirelessly to secure the university’s stability and growth, often against the odds. We are deeply grateful for his contributions, and he leaves with our admiration, appreciation, and full support.”

A graduate of Sienna Heights University in Michigan, Dr. Huddleston holds a master’s degree in adult and higher education and an educational specialist degree in leadership from Grand Valley State University and a doctorate in community college leadership from Ferris State University in Michigan.
