The oldest private historically Black college and university in the nation has named Herman J. Felton Jr. as the educational institution's 21st president. He has been serving as senior vice president and chief operating officer at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Dr. James is the former provost and vice president for academic affairs at Virginia Union University in Richmond. She has also served as dean for undergraduate studies, professor of communication and executive assistant to the president of Clark Atlanta University in Georgia.

Thomas A. Walker Jr. has been serving since 2014 as president of the Grand Island campus of Central Community College in Nebraska. He holds a master's degree and an educational doctorate from the University of Memphis.

New data from the Association of American Medical Colleges show that during the 2015-16 academic year, 5,505 Black students were enrolled in U.S. medical schools. Three historically Black schools had the highest number of Black enrollees. Four medical schools had no Black students.
Alabama A&M University Extends Contract of President Andrew Hugine Jr.
The board of trustees of Alabama A&M University in Huntsville has approved a contract extension through July 15, 2020 for Andrew Hugine Jr., president of the university. Dr. Hugine became the eleventh president of the university in 2009.
JoAnne Epps Named Provost at Temple University in Philadelphia
Professor Epps joined the Temple faculty in 1985. She was named associate dean of academic affairs at the law school in 1989. She was promoted to full professor in 1994. Since 2008, she has served as dean of the university's Beasley School of Law.
James Ammons Changes His Mind on Becoming Provost at Delaware State University
In May, it was announced that James H. Ammons would be the next provost and vice president for academic affairs at Delaware State University in Dover. Now Dr. Ammons has decided to stay put as a professor of political science at Florida A&M University.
A Change in Leadership at the White House HBCU Initiative
Ivory Toldson, executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities has resigned and will return to the faculty at Howard University. Kim Hunter Reed will now lead the office. She was a deputy undersecretary of education and former chief of staff for the Louisiana Board of Regents.

James E. Clark was named the 12th president of South Carolina State University. Clark, a successful businessman, has been a member of the board of trustees of South Carolina State University for the past year. He has also been chair of the University of South Carolina Research Foundation for the past three years.
Willie Larkin Steps Down as President of Grambling State University
After just less than one year in office as the ninth president of Grambling State University in Louisiana, Willie D. Larkin has resigned his post. While President Larkin resigned, his comments appear to show that he was being forced out of his position.

In 2014 the Southern Commission on Colleges and Schools placed South Carolina State University on accreditation probation. Now with the university's finances in better shape, the university has been taken off the probation list.
Donald E. Palm Named Provost at Virginia State University
Dr. Palm has been serving as a tenured professor in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and associate provost for undergraduate education at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. He will begin his new job on August 1.

The New President of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College
Monica J. Posey has served as interim president for the past eight months. Previously, she was provost and academic vice president. According to the college, Dr. Posey is the first African American woman president of a major educational institution in the Cincinnati metropolitan area.

Jenny L. Jones was named dean of the School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University. Karen Richardson was named dean of undergraduate admissions and enrollment management at Tufts University and Osaro E. Airen is the new dean of student retention at Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, Texas.
Agency Votes to Revoke the Accreditation of Paine College in Augusta, Georgia
The college quickly responded by saying it would appeal the decision. While the appeal is underway, the college will retain its accredited status. Should the appeal fail and accreditation is revoked, students at Paine College will be ineligible for federal financial aid programs.
Linda Rose is the New President of Santa Ana College in California
Since August 2014, Dr. Rose has been the president of Los Angeles Southwest College. Before taking the helm at Los Angeles Southwest College, she served for three years are vice president of academic affairs at Santa Ana College.

Patricia Pierce Ramsey, chair of the department of natural sciences at Bowie State University in Maryland, will become provost at The Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Peter O. Nwosu, a professor and administrator at California State University, Fullerton, will be provost at Clark Atlanta University.

The new deans are Francine Conway at Rutgers University in New Jersey, Karlene Burrell-McRae at Colby College in Maine, DeMethra LaSha Bradley at Macalester College in Minnesota, and Logan Powell at Brown University in Rhode Island.

Dr. Thompson-Sellers is a professor of business information systems at Georgia State University in Atlanta and has been serving as senior associate dean at the university. Earlier she taught at Georgia Perimeter College in Decatur and at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.

Austin A. Lane has been serving as executive vice chancellor of Lone Star College System based in The Woodlands, Texas. From 2009 to 2015, Dr. Lane was president of the Montgomery campus of Lone Star College.
University of Chicago Historian Thomas Holt Elected to the American Philosophical Society
Thomas C. Holt is the James Westfall Thompson Distinguished Service Professor of American and African American History at the University of Chicago. Other African Americans elected members of the society are Roger W. Ferguson of TIAA-CREF and Risa J. Lavizzo-Mourney of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Ed Roberson is an artist-in-residence at Northwestern University. Roberson was a professor of literature and creative writing at Rutgers University and has also taught at the University of Chicago and Columbia College in Chicago.
Raymond Burse Resigns as President of Kentucky State University
President Burse has been highly critical of budget cuts made by new Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin. Burse said in the past that the cuts would be so devastating to the university that it may have “to declare financial exigency and/or prepare a closure plan.”
Lisa Mims-Devezin Selected to Lead Southern University at New Orleans
Dr. Mims-Devezin has been serving as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the university since 2014. She joined the faculty at Southern University at New Orleans in 1993 as an assistant professor of biology.

The National Academy of Sciences does not publish data on the race or ethnicity of its members. But according to a JBHE analysis of the group of 84 new members, it appears that only one of the new members is an African American.

Akirah J. Bradley was appointed dean of students and associate vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has been serving as assistant dean of students at the University of California, Berkeley.
Paine College Names Samuel Sullivan as Its President, But Not for Long
Samuel Sullivan was named acting president of Paine College in September 2014. A month later he was fired but then rehired as interim president after student and faculty protests. Now he has been named president, but only for a term of one year.
