On February 25, 1960, a group of Black students at Alabama State University participated in a sit-in at a racially segregated lunch counter at the Montgomery County Courthouse. Nine were expelled. Now the state has expunged the records of those disciplined in 1960.

A Change in Leadership at Alabama State University in Montgomery
By a vote of 8-6, the board of trustees of Alabama State University voted to suspend Gwendolyn Boyd from her position as president of the university. President Boyd was charged with "failure to maintain the confidence of the board." Provost Leon Wilson was named interim president.

Gwendolyn Boyd Has Her Contract Extended at Alabama State University
Gwendolyn Boyd, president of Alabama State University in Montgomery since February 1, 2014, has had her contact extended by the board of trustees for another three years until 2019. However, the vote by the board was 8 to 6 in favor of the contract extension.

Professor Maryland began his tenure on the Alabama State University faculty in 1963 as an instructor of mathematics. He served as chair of the department of mathematics and physical sciences at the university from 1974 to his retirement in 2009.
