For more than three decades, Dr. Patterson taught voice at the University of Michigan, where he was the first African American professor of music. Earlier in his career, he taught voice at two HBCUs: Southern University and Virginia State University.

Bonham, former acting director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, has been named president of Meharry Medical College's Diaspora Human Genetics Institute, where scholars are currently working to build the largest African ancestry genomics research database. Bonham will also direct Meharry's Center for Bioethics, Social, and Behavioral Research.

The African American Civil Rights grant program from the National Park Service has awarded grants to Auburn University, the University of Northern Colorado, Eastern Michigan University, Clemson University, and the University of South Carolina aimed at preserving sites and history relating to African Americans.

Dwight Hamilton has been named the chief diversity officer at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. Lois V. Greene is the new senior vice president of wellness, diversity, equity, and inclusion at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, and B. Elliott Renfroe was named chief diversity officer at Greenville University in Illinois.

Taking on new roles relating to diversity are Rockell Brown Burton at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University in New York, Courtney Randall at the University of California, Davis, Rodney L. Parker at Loyola University Maryland, and Doris Fields at Eastern Michigan University.

A widely respected administrator at the college since coming to campus in May 2011, Dr. Selmon currently serves as the provost/executive vice president providing leadership and oversight for academic affairs, athletics, facilities, and student services.

Taking on new administrative roles are Boyd Copeland at St. Louis Community College, Alecia Shields-Gadson at Delaware State University, Reginald Wilson at Pasco-Hernando State College in Florida, Melissa Thrasher at Eastern Michigan University, Dawna Jones at Duke University in North Carolina, and Tammy A. Bagby at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.

Here is this week’s roundup of African Americans who have been appointed to new administrative positions at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Currently, Dr. Joseph serves as interim chancellor of Indiana University South Bend. She was executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the South Bend campus before she was asked to step into her current role. Earlier in her career, she served as dean of the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University.

Katrina VanderWoude has been serving as vice president for academic affairs at Grossmont College in El Cajon, California. Earlier, she was vice provost at Rochester College in Michigan. Dr. VanderWoude will begin her new job on August 6.

Colwick Wilson was the director of research, innovation, and grants at Kettering Health Network in Ohio. Earlier, he served in several capacities at Loma Linda University in Los Angeles.

Halloween season always produces its share of racist costumes on college campuses. This year was no exception.

Michael V. Tidwell has been named the sole finalist to become president of the University of Texas at Tyler. Under state law, the board must wait 21 days after the announcement to make the appointment official. Tidwell is dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University.

As has been the case every year since JBHE was founded in 1993 incidents of racial hate continue to plague the campuses of American higher education. In recent days, there have been several incidents at campuses across the United States.

For the past seven years, Gragg, who holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Arkansas, has been the director of intercollegiate athletics at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.

In 1979 he was selected as the 17th president of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti and served in that post for a decade.

Michael Tidwell has been serving as dean of the College of Business at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.

The noted poet is professor emerita at Eastern Michigan University.
