HBCU Brilliance Initiative to Provide Technical Assistance Funding to Eleven HBCUs

Reinvestment Fund's HBCU Brilliance Initiative aims to secure the future of HBCUs through strengthening their financial health. For its inaugural cohort, the initiative will provide $40,000 grants and up to $1 million in financing to support campus infrastructure improvements at 11 historically Black higher education institutions.

Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr. Elevated to President of the Interdenominational Theological Center

Dr. Mason has led the Interdenominational Theological Center on an interim basis for the past year. He has over 35 years of experience in education, including academic leadership roles at several historically Black colleges.

Four Black Leaders Appointed to Administrative Roles at HBCUs

The appointments are J. William Nicholas at South Carolina State University, DeVaria Hudson Ponton at Grambling State University in Louisiana, Brian Dawsey at Savannah State University in Georgia, and Arthur Vaughn at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta.

Vanessa Lovelace is the New Executive Director of the Louisville Institute

Based at the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Kentucky and funded by the Lilly Endowment, the Louisville Institute awards grants and fellowships in support of leadership, education, and research on North American religion. Dr. Lovelace, a longtime professor and scholar of the Hebrew Bible, began her tenure as the institute's top executive leader on August 1.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has recently bestowed $3 million worth of grant funding to 24 projects across the country that center on Black joy, resilience, innovation, and activism. Eight of these grants have gone to higher education institutions.

Matthew Wesley Williams has been named the eleventh president of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He has served as interim president since July 2019. He is the youngest person to ever lead the educational institution.
