Dr. Wharton was the first Black president of Michigan State University, the first Black chancellor of the State University of New York, and the first Black CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
Today, only 4 percent of the faculty members in the state system are Black. Now in its second year, the Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth (PRODiG) program has resulted in 41 percent of all new faculty hires being from underrepresented groups.
The honorees are J. Marshall Shepherd, the director of the atmospheric sciences program at the University of Georgia, H. Carl McCall, former chairman of the State University of New York Board of Trustees, and Linwood Whitten, director of diversity and international affairs at Alabama State University.
The Black women scholars who have been assigned new responsibilities are Teresa Y. Smith at the SUNYb Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, Toni Sims-Muhammad at Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, and Stephanie White at the University of Kentucky.

In recent years, SUNY has been successful in increasing diversity among its students. As of Fall 2018, 28.5 percent of SUNY students are from underrepresented groups, up from 27.9 percent in 2017, and 15.4 percent in 2007. However, this progress has not been replicated among the university's faculty.

Gerald Porter has been named provost and senior vice president of Fielding Graduate University, in Santa Barbara, California. He was a professor and vice president of academic affairs at the Forest Institute in Springfield, Missouri.
