On Tuesday, November 2, voters in the Commonwealth of Virginia elected Winsome Sears to the position of lieutenant governor. She will be the first woman and the first African American to hold the office in the 400-year history of the Commonwealth.
Jerome Tinker was named executive director for the Jackson State University Development Foundation. Tamara Williams has been appointed interim vice president for workforce solutions at Tidewater Community College and Valerie S. Fields was appointed vice president for student affairs at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.
Dr. Boyd currently serves as provost and chief operating officer at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, Virginia. From 2006 to 2014, he served in several posts including dean of Business and Career Technologies at Elgin Community College in Illinois.
Since 2009, Tyjuan Lee has served as vice president for student affairs at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland. Earlier, Dr. Lee was associate vice president for enrollment management and student services at Tidewater Community College in Virginia.
Taking on new administrative roles are Darrice Griffin at the University of Massachusetts, Corey L. McCray at Tidewater Community College in Virginia, Takeyah Young at The Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Charles Azebeokhi at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, and Rochelle Smith at Washington University.
Dr. Jeffrey S. Boyd has been serving as dean of sustainability, business, and career technologies at Elgin Community College in Illinois. Earlier in his career, he was on the staff at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California.
