On February 22, 1960, 34 students from Virginia Union University were arrested for staging a sit-in at a segregated lunchcounter of a downtown department store. The city has now honored this group with a historical marker.

Yale Worker Breaks Stained Glass Window That Depicted Slaves
A dishwasher at the Calhoun residential college at Yale University, used a broom handle to punch out a stained glass window that depicted slaves carrying cotton. Yale later said that the windows depicting scenes from the life of slavery defender John C. Calhoun would be removed.
In Memoriam: Raymond Gavins, 1942-2016
Dr. Gavins joined the faculty at Duke in 1970. He was the first African American to join the faculty of Duke's history department. Dr. Gavins was promoted to associate professor in 1977 and to full professor in 1992.
Jessica Bailey to Lead Fort Valley State University
Jessica Bailey will serve as acting president of Fort Valley State University in Georgia until July 1 when current president Ivelaw Griffith leaves office. On July 1, Dr. Bailey will become interim president of the university.

A New Master’s Degree Program at Virginia Union University
Virginia Union University in Richmond has announced that it will be offering a new master's degree in curriculum and instruction. It is the first graduate program at the university offered outside the university's School of Theology.
New Book Documents the History of Virginia Union University
The book is only the third published history of the institution and the first available in general circulation since 1925. It has been published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the founding of the institution in 1865.
