The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced a $262.5 million investment in institutions of higher education to foster the next generation of diverse agricultural professionals across the nation. Among the grantees are seven historically Black universities.

Taking on new administrative roles are James Flowers at Tacoma Community College in Washington, Tasha Bibb at the Mississippi State University Office of Technology Management in Vicksburg, Trey Jones at West Virginia State University in Institute, Nicole Johnson at Rhodes College in Memphis, and Dominique Harrison at North Carolina A&T State University.
Ericke Cage Named the 13th President of Historically Black West Virginia State University
President Cage joined the university in July 2021 as vice president and chief of staff and served as the university’s chief operating officer managing the day-to-day operations of the university from July 30 to his appointment as interim president in November 2021.
In Memoriam: Thomas Winston Cole Jr., 1941-2022
In 1987, Dr. Cole was named president of both Atlanta University and Clark College, to simultaneously manage both institutions and create a consolidation plan. President Cole was appointed the founding president of Clark Atlanta University in 1988. He served in that role until 2002.
Ericke Cage Is the New Leader of Historically Black West Virginia State University
Cage joined the university in July as vice president and chief of staff and has been serving as the university’s chief operating officer managing the day-to-day operations of the university since July 30. Before arriving at West Virginia State, Cage was the senior advisor to the president and university ombudsman at Norfolk State University in Virginia.

In 2016, Dr. Hemphill became the seventh president of Radford University in Virginia. Earlier, he served from 2012 to 2016 as the 10th president of West Virginia State University, a historically Black educational institution near Charleston.
Nicole Pride Appointed President of Historically Black West Virginia State University
Dr. Pride had been serving as the vice provost for academic strategy and operations at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Earlier she served as associate vice chancellor for university relations and chief of staff for the chancellor of the university.
R. Charles Byers is the New Leader of West Virginia State University
Dr. Byers has served as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at the university since July 2019. He had retired as provost in 2014 after 41 years of service at West Virginia State University.
Ann Brothers Smith Honored by the American Association of University Administrators
Dr. Smith, a retired public school administrator, has served as a member of the West Virginia State University Board of Governors since 2011, serving as chair, vice chair, and chair of several board committees. She is the former associate superintendent for school leadership for the Detroit public school system.

Sherine Obare to Lead the the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering in Greensboro
Sherine O. Obare is the former associate vice president for research and a professor of chemistry at Western Michigan University. Dr. Obare also serves as a research leader fellow at the American Public and Land-Grant University Council on Research.
Sherine Obare Named Dean of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering
Sherine O. Obare has been named dean of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University. She will become the school's second permanent dean on January 14. She has been serving as a professor at Western Michigan University.
Roslyn Clark Artis Receives Contract Extension as President of Benedict College Through 2026
Dr. Artis became president of Benedict College in June 2017. During her brief tenure as president, Dr. Artis has launched many initiatives aimed at positioning Benedict as a competitive institution. She lowered tuition by 26 percent and raised standards for admission.
Keith Jackson Named Dean of the College of Creative Arts at West Virginia University
Dr. Jackson had been serving as interim dean since 2017. He has been a member of the music faculty at the university since 1995, serving as both a professor of music and director of the School of Music. He is active in both classical and jazz styles as a performer.
West Virginia State University Honors Alumnus Earl Lloyd, the First Black Man to Play in the NBA
Historically Black West Virginia State University will recognize Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame member and alumnus Earl Lloyd with the naming of a street on campus in his honor. The basketball legend passed away on February 26, 2015.
In Memoriam: Adam S. Arnold Jr., 1922-2017
In 1957, Dr. Arnold was hired to the faculty in the department of finance at the University of Notre Dame. He was the first African American faculty member at the university and was the first to be granted tenure. Dr. Arnold taught at Notre Dame for 30 years.
Anthony L. Jenkins Appointed President of West Virginia State University
West Virginia State University is a historically Black university but today only 10 percent of the 2,800-member undergraduate student body is Black. Dr. Jenkins has been serving as senior associate vice president at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Since July 2012, Dr. Hemphill has served as the 10th president of West Virginia State University. Previously, he was vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
New Alliance Seeks to Boost Black and Other Minorities in STEM Fields
Under the program, nine colleges and universities in Kentucky and West Virginia will seek to increase the percentage of minority students in STEM disciplines by 15 percent by 2016.
