University of Florida to Offer a Major in African American Studies

university-florida-logoThe University of Florida has announced that it will be offering a bachelor’s degree program in African American studies, beginning in the fall of 2013. The university has offered a program in African American studies for the past 45 years but until now students could not major in the discipline. To major in the discipline, students at the University of Florida would need to complete 120 credit hours with at least 30 credit hours in designated African American studies courses, half of them in high-level courses. Students would also have to complete a research methods requirement.

While an African American major will be offered, there will not be an African American studies department at the university at this time. An academic department would be able to hire its own faculty specifically for African American studies.
