Saint Augustine’s University Maintains Its Accreditation

In December 2023, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) placed Saint Augustine’s University the historically Black institution in Raleigh, North Carolina, on probation.

Saint Augustine’s University’s leaders took steps to appeal the decision. In a February 2024 appeal meeting, the SACSCOC decided to uphold its decision to strip Saint Augustine University’s accreditation. Despite this ruling, Saint Augustine’s University was granted the opportunity to submit their dispute to arbitration in March 2024.

Now the SACSCOC’s arbitration committee announced its decision to overturn the ruling of the February 2024 appeal meeting. This new ruling allows the historically Black institution to maintain its membership and accreditation with the SACSCOC under the sanction of Probation for Cause until December 2024.

“The commitment and resilience shown by our community throughout this ordeal exemplify the spirit and determination that define Saint Augustine’s University,” said Janelle Jennings-Alexander, interim provost and vice president of academic affairs. “Our faculty and staff’s tireless efforts to preserve SAU’s legacy of educational distinction help strengthen us in this accreditation journey.”

Saint Augustine’s University is prepared to welcome students back to campus for the upcoming Fall 2024 semester.
