The board of trustees of St. Mary’s College of Maryland has unanimously voted to appoint Tuajuanda Jordan as the educational institution’s next president. St. Mary’s College of Maryland in St. Mary’s City, is a state-operated honors college that enrolls about 1,900 undergraduates. African Americans make up 7 percent of the student body.
Dr. Jordan currently serves as professor of chemistry and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Previously, she was director of the Science Education Alliance at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Earlier in her career, she was associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and associate vice president for academic affairs at Xavier University in New Orleans. Dr. Jordan will become president of St. Mary’s College on July 1.
Professor Jordan is a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she majored in chemistry. She holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
