Loren Blanchard Named Executive Vice Chancellor for the California State University System

loren-blanchard-thumbLoren J. Blanchard was named executive vice chancellor for academic and student affairs for the California State University System. He has been serving as provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Xavier University in New Orleans. He is the first person to serve as provost at Xavier. Dr Blanchard will take on his new role in July.

Prior to coming to Xavier University, Dr. Blanchard was the chief academic officer for the University of Louisiana System in Baton Rouge and for the Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans.

Dr. Blanchard is a graduate of Xavier University. He holds a master’s degree in educational administration from McNeese State University in St. Charles, Louisiana, and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Georgia.

Black Matriculants Are Down at U.S. Medical Schools

In 2024, the share of Black applicants to U.S. medical schools increased by 2.8 percent from 2023. However, the share of Black medical school matriculants decreased by 11.6 percent. Notably, there has been year-over-year progress in overall Black medical school representation, which has risen to from 7.9 percent in 2017 to 10.3 percent in 2024.
