Virginia Union University Names Its Next President

Virginia Union University, the historically Black educational institution in Richmond, has selected Hakim J. Lucas as its thirteenth president. He will take office on September 1. The university enrolls about 1,400 undergraduate students and 400 graduate students.

In accepting the appointment, Dr. Lucas said, “Virginia Union University has a rich history of academic excellence and I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this distinguished university. I look forward to joining the dedicated administrators, faculty and staff as we continue to make a difference in the academic life of our students.”

Since 2012, Dr. Lucas has served as vice president for institutional advancement at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Earlier in his career, Dr. Lucas served as director of development for the Old Westbury campus of the State University of New York and dean of institutional advancement and development at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn.

Dr. Lucas is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta. He holds a master’s degree in education from Tufts University in Massachusetts, a master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York, and a doctoral degree in education from Fordham University in New York.
