Last week JBHE reported that Howard University in Washington, D.C., became the first historically Black college or university to receive the Research One (R1) Carnegie Classification from the American Council of Education. To be conferred with the R1 Classification, an institution must average at least $50 million in annual research and development expenditures and produce at least 70 research doctoral graduates annually. There are now 187 R1 universities in the United States.
There are now 139 universities – including 13 HBCUs – that currently are designated with the R2 Carnegie Classification. These institutions spend at least $5 million on research and development and award at least 20 research doctorates annually. The HBCUs with current R2 status are:

Delaware State University
Florida A&M University
Hampton University
Jackson State University
Morgan State University
North Carolina A&T State University
Prairie View A&M University
South Carolina State University
Southern University
Tennessee State University
Texas Southern University
Virginia State University
Delaware State University was granted R2 status for the first time. Tony Allen, president of Delaware State University, stated that “this achievement is a credit to the talented leadership of our academic deans, their teams, and all research-active faculty across our campuses, many of whom are focusing on inter- and cross-disciplinary research, a noted driver of our efforts.”
Virginia State University also joined the group of R2 research institutions for the first time. “This is a significant milestone for Virginia State University,” said Omar Faison, vice provost for research and economic development. “Achieving R2 status signals to federal agencies, industry partners, and prospective students that VSU is a leader in innovation, discovery, and advanced scholarship.”
Hampton University in Virginia also was awarded R2 status for the first time. “This is a transformative, defining moment for Hampton University,” said Darrell K. Williams, president of the university. “Achieving Research 2 status reflects our unwavering dedication to academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and the expansion of opportunities for our students and faculty. This milestone strengthens our position among the nation’s leading research institutions and enhances our ability to make a meaningful impact through scholarship and discovery.”
