Byron D’Andra Orey, professor of political science at historically Black Jackson State University in Mississippi, has been named president of the Southern Political Science Association, a professional organization dedicated to promoting research in major fields and subfields of political science through conferences and its Journal of Politics.
Dr. Orey first joined the Jackson State University faculty in 2008 as a professor and chair of the political science department – a position he held for four years. Earlier in his career, he taught at the University of Nebraska and the University of Mississippi. He has been a member of the Southern Political Science Association for three decades
In his scholarly work, Dr. Orey focuses on race and politics, biopolitics, political psychology, and legislative politics and voting. His newly edited book, Mississippi, Conflict and Change: A New Edition (University Press of Mississippi) is set for publication in August.
An HBCU graduate, Dr. Orey received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mississippi Valley State University. He holds a master of public administration degree from the University of Mississippi, a master’s degree in political science from Stony Brook University in New York, and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of New Orleans.
