Higher Education Gifts or Grants of Interest to African Americans

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

The Cathy Hughes School of Communications at historically Black Howard University in Washington, D.C. has received a $300,000 gift from sports journalist and alumnus Jim Trotter. The funds will provide scholarships to Howard students who are pursuing sports journalism or sports management degrees.

North Carolina Central University has received a $1.4 million grant from the Anonymous Trust to create the Legal Desert Fellowship Program. The fellowship will provide financial support to recent graduates of the HBCU’s School of Law who commit to practicing law in rural Eastern North Carolina counties for at least four years. Participating graduates will receive student loan forgiveness, bar exam preparation assistance, and professional mentorship. Additionally, the new grant will also support students in NCCU’s Aspiring Eagles Academy, a summer bridge program for incoming students.

The School of Architecture and Planning at Morgan State University in Baltimore has received three grants to advance clean energy, planning, innovation, and curriculum development across campus. The HBCU was awarded over $1.3 million from the Maryland Energy Administration, $100,000 from the Maryland Industrial Partnerships program, and $30,000 from the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education. The funding will support initiatives focused on infrastructure improvements, student research opportunities, and academic programming.

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, a historically Black medical school in California, has been awarded a $5.5 million grant from Health Net and the Centene Foundation to expand and strengthen California’s healthcare workforce. The grant will support a wide-range of initiatives, including student scholarships, salary support for medical residents, academic support programs, faculty development, and MCAT preparation.
