Roena I. Wilford, an esteemed alumna and former professor at Southern University and A&M College in Louisiana, passed away on April 2.
In 1967, Wilford enrolled at Southern University, majoring in physics and math education. During her senior year, she was elected as the first-ever woman president of the HBCU’s Student Government Association. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she went on to receive her master’s degree and an education specialist degree from Louisiana State University.
Wilford ultimately went on to teach physics at Southern University. Outside of academia, she served as a Girl Scouts leader and Sunday School teacher in Baton Rouge. She was also a dedicated member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, serving as a regional and international leader with the organization for over five decades.
“Ms. Wilford’s impact on Southern University, the Baton Rouge community, and beyond is immeasurable,” said John K. Pierre, Southern University chancellor. “Her leadership, service, and dedication to uplifting others have left an indelible mark on our institution and all who had the privilege of knowing her.”
