Higher Education Gifts or Grants of Interest to African Americans

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

Ann Lippert, assistant professor of psychology at historically Black Prairie View A&M University in Texas, has received $90,000 in funding from the National Institutes of Health to support her research into how people interpret and act on knowledge, particularly in situations influenced by stereotypes and biases. Through her work, she aims to create tools that merge technology and psychology to support mental health and learning.

Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina has been awarded a $2 million grant from the Bedford Falls Foundation to support the HBCU’s nursing program. In an effort to address the critical need for nurses in North Carolina, the funding will be designated for need-based nursing scholarships, student success efforts, and an emergency fund.

Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee – one of the country’s four historically Black medical schools – has received a gift from former U.S. Senator Bill Frist and his wife Tracy Frist to establish “The Senator Bill and Tracy Frist Endowment for Planetary and Human Health.” The new endowment will provide an annual scholarship to one Meharry student in support of research on innovative solutions to challenges facing planetary health, climate action, and human health.

The Eagle Counseling, Consultation, and Research Clinic in the School of Education at historically Black North Carolina Central University has been awarded a $1.24 million grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation to launch Project HARMONY (Helping to Access Reliable Mental healthcare Opportunities for North Carolina Youth). The program will focus on expanding mental and behavioral support services for youth in Durham, Person, and Vance Counties with plans to expand to other areas throughout the state over time.
