Meharry Medical College in Nashville Acquires Eight New Medical Clinics

Meharry Medical College in Nashville, one of four historically Black medical schools in the United States, has expanded its medical services and student training opportunities through the acquisition of eight medical clinics previously owned by Sanitas USA, Inc.

Finalized on March 31, the purchase was facilitated by MMCV, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the HBCU charged with non-academic-related business efforts, in a joint venture with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. Located in Nashville and Memphis, the acquired clinics currently serve a total of 25,000 active patients and employ 172 individuals, including 40 providers. The change in ownership will not impact existing patients or normal operations.

The acquisition will allow Meharry Medical College to provide more clinical training sites for its medical students and residents, providing them with an enhanced healthcare education and new research opportunities. Additionally, the HBCU plans to explore avenues to improve patient care at the clinics, such as adding speciality and ambulatory surgery services and expanding relationships with additional insurance providers.

“This strategic acquisition aligns with and amplifies Meharry’s mission to deliver community-focused healthcare and expand access to high-quality medical services,” said Dr. James E. K. Hildreth, Sr., president and CEO of Meharry Medical College. “By integrating these practices into Meharry Health Network, MMC will be able to leverage our resources and expertise to enhance the care experience for patients while also creating new training and career opportunities for our students, faculty, and alumni.”
