S. Keith Hargrove has been named the next chancellor of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. He will begin his presidency on June 15.
Elizabeth City State University is a historically Black institution enrolling over 2,000 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students. African Americans represent two-thirds of the undergraduate population.
With an extensive background in HBCU leadership, Dr. Hargrove comes to his new role from Tuskegee University in Alabama, where he has served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs for the past three years. Prior to Tuskegee, he spent 12 years on the faculty at Tennessee State University, serving as dean of the College of Engineering and head of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Engineering Research Institute. Earlier, he was a professor and chair of the department of industrial, manufacturing, and information engineering at Morgan State University in Baltimore for seven years.
“Throughout my career in higher education, I have been a strong proponent of student achievement,” said Dr. Hargrove. “I am excited to lead Elizabeth City State University with a focus on academic excellence and success, fiscal and leadership stability, and a vision for growth and elevated reputation.”
Dr. Hargrove is a two-time alumnus of Tennessee State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and his MBA. He holds a master’s degree in engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and a doctorate in industrial and manufacturing engineering from the University of Iowa.
