Three Black Administrators Taking on New Roles at Universities

Aaron Dixon has been named acting assistant vice president for student success, retention, and persistence at Alabama A&M University. In this position, he will oversee programs and services that support students’ academic progress and sense of belonging. Before his new role, he was executive director of the HBCU’s Freshman Academy.

Dixon received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Alabama A&M University and his master’s degree in college student personnel from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in leadership and decision-making from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Dwane M. Sterling has been named associate vice president for enterprise solutions and enabling technologies in the division of information technology at Virginia Tech. He comes to his new role from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, where he was chief information officer. In addition to higher education, he has also served in information technology leadership roles in the healthcare industry.

Sterling is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where he majored in industrial engineering.

Alison Chandler has been appointed assistant provost of student success at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. With 20 years of progressive experience in student success, inclusive campus environments, and serving underrepresented populations, her career spans academic advising, student support, academic affairs, university teaching, and administrative leadership.

Dr. Chandler holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Spelman College in Atlanta, a master’s degree in educational psychology and counselor education from Tennessee Tech University, a master’s degree in academic advising from Kansas State University, and a doctorate in higher education leadership from National Louis University in Chicago.
