New Appointments for Ten Black Administrators at Colleges and Universities

James Orr has been named the inaugural senior vice provost for undergraduate student success at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He most recently served as vice provost for strategic enrollment management at Ohio State University. Earlier, he held several key leadership roles with the University of Memphis, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Tech.

Dr. Orr holds a master’s degree in public policy and administration and a doctorate in philosophy, public policy, and administration from Mississippi State University.

Marvin E. Green, Jr. is the new major gift officer for athletics and the Marching “100” Band at Florida A&M University. He has previously served as the HBCU’s associate athletic director, director of student activities, and head coach of the men’s golf team. Since assuming his new role last month, he has already raised over $125,000 in funding to support student-athletes and marching band members.

A two-time graduate of Florida A&M University, Green holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in sports and leisure management.

Kerwin Graham has been promoted to vice president for student services at Greenville Technical College in South Carolina. His background includes over 15 years of leadership experience in student services and enrollment management. Prior to his recent appointment, he was the college’s dean of enrollment services.

An HBCU graduate, Dr. Graham earned his bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. He holds an MBA from Shorter University in Rome, Georgia, and a doctorate in business administration from Argosy University.

Sherri Reese has been named associate vice president of human resources at Salisbury University in Maryland. She comes to Salisbury from Michigan State University, where she was the assistant vice president of talent management and director of talent and consulting services. Earlier, she was the human resources director for Michigan State’s Office of the Provost and Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs.

Dr. Reese holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, a master’s degree in criminal justice, a Ph.D. in public policy and administration, and a second Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology all from Michigan State University.

Quinsheta Powell has been named director of alumni affairs at Talladega College in Alabama. She had been serving as an alumni relations coordinator. In her new role, she will oversee efforts to strengthen alumni engagement, develop impactful programs, and support the HBCU’s strategic initiatives.

Powell is an alumna of Talladega College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She holds a master of social work degree from Alabama A&M University.

Durrell K. Hurst has been named director of residential life at North Carolina Central University. He comes to the HBCU from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he was director of housing and residential life. Earlier in his career, he held residential life and student affairs positions with North Carolina State University, Middle Tennessee State University, and Ball State University in Indiana.

Dr. Hurst earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Eastern Washington University, a master’s degree in student affairs administration in higher education from Ball State University, and a Ph.D. in leadership studies from historically Black North Carolina A&T State University.

Alisha Williams-McCorvey has been promoted to vice president for student affairs at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. Prior to her new role, she served as assistant vice president and chief diversity officer. Earlier in her career, she spent over two decades as a social worker, principal, and administrator for K-12 schools.

Dr. Williams-McCorvey holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and social work from the State University of New York at New Paltz, a master of social work degree from Marywood University in Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Fordham University in New York.

John M. Berry has been appointed vice president for university advancement at Voorhees University in South Carolina. He has extensive experience leading advancement and development initiatives at historically Black universities. Previously, he held key leadership positions with Lincoln University of Missouri, South Carolina State University, West Virginia State University, Florida Memorial University, and Winston-Salem State University.

Dr. Berry holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in social work from Southern University at New Orleans. He earned his doctorate in philanthropy and leadership from the Union Institute and University.

Yvonne Harris has been named vice president for research and innovation at Bowie State University in Maryland. She comes to the HBCU from Northern Illinois University, where she was vice president of research and innovative partnerships. Throughout her career, she has held key leadership positions with Truman College, Harper College, Chicago State University, James Madison University, and California State University, Sacramento.

Dr. Harris holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, as well as a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular radiation biology all from Northern Illinois University.

Robert A. Hassell has been appointed police chief and associate vice chancellor of police and public safety at North Carolina A&T State University. He recently retired from the Rocky Mount, North Carolina police department after more than four years as chief. His experience in higher education includes service as associate vice chancellor of police and public safety at Fayetteville State University.

Dr. Hassell holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina, a master of public administration degree from Central Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in management and organizational leadership from the University of Phoenix.
