A Trio of Black Leaders Selected for New Positions at HBCUs

Marcus Burgess is the new senior vice president of enterprise partnerships and innovation at Florida A&M University. He recently stepped down as interim president of Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Earlier, he was vice president for institutional advancement at Claflin University in South Carolina. His other experience in higher education includes advancement positions with Florida Memorial University, Voorhees College, and York Technical College.

Dr. Burgess holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Claflin University, a master’s degree in education administration from The Citadel in South Carolina, and a doctorate from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Rickey Oglesby has been selected to serve as interim director of bands at Tuskegee University in Alabama. He has served as the HBCU’s assistant director of bands for the past two years. Prior to joining the Tuskegee community, he was the assistant director of bands at historically Black Edward Waters University in Florida for eight years.

Oglesby earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. He holds a master’s degree in music education from the University of North Florida.

Tia Wright-Richards was recently named vice president for institutional advancement at Talladega College in Alabama. She has over 20 years of experience in advancement, fundraising, and organizational transformation. Previously, she was interim president and vice president for academic affairs at Denmark Technical College in South Carolina.

Wright-Richards received her bachelor’s degree in business management from Southern Wesleyan University in South Carolina and her master’s degree in business management and leadership from Webster University. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in organizational leadership at Columbia International University.
