Higher Education Gifts or Grants of Interest to African Americans

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

Fayetteville State University in North Carolina has received a $2 million gift from Cape Fear Valley Health. As part of this donation, the HBCU’s nursing school has been renamed to the Cape Fear Valley School of Nursing. The new funds will directly support the school’s academic programs, student training opportunities, and efforts to prepare the next generation of North Carolina’s healthcare professionals.

Keisha G. Rogers, professor of rehabilitation counseling at historically Black Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, was recently awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to expand training opportunities for graduate students pursuing careers in rehabilitation counseling. The new funding will provide select students with tuition coverage, stipends, and professional development activities, such as opportunities to present research at state, regional, and national conferences.

Bowie State University in Maryland has received a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish a Computing Experiential Hub. The initiative will provide scholarships, stipends, internships, and research opportunities to students interested in careers in artificial intelligence and other emerging technology industries. The new program will also look to build partnerships between the HBCU and  leading technology companies.

The Meek-Eaton Black Archives, Research Center, and Museum (MEBA) at historically Black Florida A&M University was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support MEBA’S operations. The grant will support MEBA’s ongoing collection care, digitization efforts, educational programs, and public engagement events.
