This fall, Howard University in Washington, D.C., launched a new Ph.D. program in interdisciplinary biomedical sciences (IBMS) to prepare students for a wide range of careers across scientific and medical fields.
The IBMS program combines the curricula from several existing STEM graduate programs into a single integrated training experience, with an emphasis on grant writing, scientific communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students enrolled in the program can choose to focus on one of five areas of research specialization: anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, or physiology. Students can also pursue a dual medical degree and Ph.D. degree in IBMS.
“This is an important moment for Howard as we launch an interdisciplinary biomedical sciences program that strengthens our mission and leadership in discovery and equity,” said Andrea A. Hayes Dixon, dean of the College of Medicine and senior vice president for health affairs. “By combining the strengths of the College of Medicine and the Graduate School, we’re offering students unique access to innovation, mentorship, and transformative research.”
Dana A. Williams, dean of the Graduate School, added, “This program opens new pathways for discovery, equity, and leadership in medicine and research. The cross-disciplinary work of our students will shape the next generation of physician-scientists and biomedical innovators.”
