SherRhonda Gibbs has been named the next president of Texas College. Upon assuming her role on July 1, she will become the college’s first woman president since its founding in 1894.
Texas College is a historically Black educational institution located in Tyler, Texas. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the HBCU enrolls about 600 undergraduate students, 82 percent of whom are Black.
Dr. Gibbs comes to her new role from another HBCU, Morehouse College in Atlanta, where she has served as dean of the division of business and economics since July 2022. Before Morehouse, she was dean of the Monfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado. Earlier, she spent 12 years on the faculty of the University of Southern Mississippi, serving in several leadership roles such as associate dean of accreditation and analytics, interim director of the School of Management, and the Alvin Williams Endowed Chair of Minority Entrepreneurship. Dr. Gibbs has also taught at historically Black Jackson State University in Mississippi.
In her research, Dr. Gibbs focuses on entrepreneurship, including the opportunities and social psychological perspectives among Black and women entrepreneurs. She is the founder of the Women of Color Entrepreneurs Conference and was instrumental in securing funding for the first Minority Business Enterprise Center in Mississippi.
Dr. Gibbs earned her bachelor’s degree in computer science from historically Black Grambling State University in Louisiana. She holds an MBA from Winona State University in Minnesota and a Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in management from Jackson State University.
