Emory University Expels Law School Student for Racist Threats

A student at the Emory University School of Law has been dismissed following a series of racist comments and threats, according to the university’s student newspaper, The Emory Wheel.

In January, the law school banned the student from campus after other students raised concerns with his social media posts and a potential threat of a shooting on campus. However, Emory allowed the student to continue attending classes remotely while the university conducted an investigation.

Later in the semester, Emory community members again raised concerns following a series of emails between the individual and a professor. In these emails, the student wrote multiple racial slurs and threats towards African Americans, women, and transgender people.

On April 19, Badia Ahad, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and Richard Freer, the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Law and dean of the School of Law, sent a letter to the campus community condemning the student’s actions and outlining increased security measures on campus, including additional security guards, increased police presence, and mandatory building card access. However, the university concluded that the individual posed no immediate physical threat, causing Emory Law students to speak out and demand the individual be permanently removed.

Kylie Doyle, former president of the Student Bar Association, told The Emory Wheel that the university was aware of the student’s beliefs as far back as September 2025.

“Emory Law’s preferred response was inaction and complacency on these points until it went to the news,” said Doyle.

On April 23, Ahad and Freer sent another letter to the Emory community, confirming that the student had been officially expelled from Emory Law.

“As we enter the final days of the academic year, we turn our attention to healing,” Ahad and Freer wrote. “We will continue to foster a community where everyone is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
