Savannah State University Creates Free On-Campus Grocery Store for Students

Savannah State University, a historically Black educational institution in Georgia, has partnered with Goodr and Amazon to open a free on-campus grocery store for students.

Through this new initiative, SSU aims to address immediate food insecurity concerns and promote well-being and retention among its student population. The mini market, which will be accessible to students year-round, features fresh produce, pantry foods, snacks, and refrigerated and frozen goods. In addition to offering direct support to students in need, the market will also provide volunteering opportunities for students seeking hands-on learning experience in operations.

“We have students sitting in class wondering how they’re going to eat, and we want to make sure they don’t have to worry about that anymore,” Amazon’s Teretta Rodgers told the Savannah Morning News.

SSU President Jermaine Whirl added, “This is the beginning of something special and really the opportunity to continue growing on behalf of our student population.”
