New Leadership Roles for Six Black Administrators at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Genesis Doubledee was appointed senior director of marketing and communications at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. She comes to the university with more than a decade of experience spanning higher education, nonprofit, media, and corporate sectors. Doubledee’s background includes prior roles centered on building campaigns, leading cross-functional initiatives, and elevating organizational brands through visual and written communications.

Doubledee received her bachelor’s degree in mass communication from North Carolina Central University and her master’s degree in digital communication and advertising from Syracuse University in New York.

Andrea G. Riley is the new director of athletics at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. Riley has more than two decades of experience in athletic leadership, coaching, administration, and student development. For nearly a decade, Riley served as a coach and athletic administrator at Evans High School, where she managed scheduling, recruiting, budgeting, compliance, and overall program operations.

Riley earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Albany State University in Georgia, a second bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Kennesaw State University in Georgia, and a master of education degree in instruction from Central Michigan University.

Joshua Spivey is director of career development services at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. Prior to his new role, Dr. Spivey was the career center executive director at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In his new role, he will focus on building strategic community partnerships and facilitating internship and career development opportunities for students.

A graduate of Bowie State University in Maryland, Dr. Spivey holds a master’s degree from The New School in New York and an educational doctorate from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Monique Sneed was named director of human resources at Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins, Texas. With nearly two decades of human resources leadership experience, Sneed most recently served as senior human resources manager for Medtronic, Inc. Earlier in her career, she was director of human resources at Mississippi Valley State University.

Sneed is a graduate of Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in public administration.

Charlyn A. Hilliman is the new chief information officer at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Dr. Hilliman has an extensive background in higher education, including key leadership roles at Capella University and Columbia University. At Florida International University, she served as the associate vice president of information technology and associate chief health information officer for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

Dr. Hilliman received her bachelor’s degree in computer information systems and her master of public administration degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York (CUNY). She holds a Ph.D. in criminal justice from the CUNY Graduate Center.

Johngerlyn Young is vice president of institutional advancement at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Dr. Young comes to her new role with nearly 30 years of experience in philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, and institutional advancement. Her professional expertise includes major gifts, planned giving, endowment development, capital campaigns, annual giving, foundation and corporate relations, donor stewardship, and board engagement.

Dr. Young earned her bachelor’s degree in public administration and her master’s degree in philanthropy and nonprofit leadership from Grand Valley State University in Michigan. She holds a doctor of business administration degree in organizational management from Indiana Wesleyan University.
