Travis E. Mitchell has been appointed president of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture. Mitchell will begin his appointment in November.
Mitchell comes to his new role with more than three decades of experience spanning public media, nonprofit leadership, education, business development and cultural storytelling. He most recently served as senior vice president and chief content officer at Maryland Public Television.
Additionally, Mitchell is an active supporter of historically Black universities. He currently serves on Morgan State University’s foundation board and as chair of the board of visitors for Morgan State’s School of Global Journalism and Communication. Mitchell is also a member of the board of trustees for Shaw University in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina.
“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to lead the Reginald F. Lewis Museum and to build upon the tremendous work of Terri Lee Freeman, the Museum’s staff and its board of directors,” said Mitchell. “The Lewis has an extraordinary responsibility to preserve and promote Black history and culture, while helping people understand how these stories continue to shape Maryland and our nation today. I look forward to listening, learning and working alongside the museum’s staff, supporters, partners and communities to expand the ways we educate, engage, and tell these essential stories.”
Mitchell holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Morgan State University and a master’s degree in entrepreneurship and education from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. He has also completed executive education at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
