Once Again, Racist Graffiti Found on the Campus of Salisbury University in Maryland

Last November, a JBHE post reported on an incident of racial graffiti on the campus of Salisbury University in Maryland. Now two more incidents have been reported.

Racist graffiti was found on the walls of a stairwell in Henson Hall. The graffiti read: “It’s hang a nigger month. We get an extra day this year.” This is referring to the fact that it is leap year and February’s Black History Month has 29 days. Then more racist graffiti with a similar message was found on a door in Fulton Hall.

Charles Wright, president of Salisbury University, issued a statement saying “tonight, our campus is under attack by a coward. Not one but multiple racist threats are being directed at Black and Brown members of OUR community. An attack on some members of our campus community is an attack on all of us, and we all need to respond.”

President Wright canceled classes for one day to allow the university to heal. The next day the university announced that a suspect had been identified. The statement said that the suspect did not have an “immediate connection to the campus.”
