Historically Black Central State University in Ohio Names a New President

Cynthia Jackson-Hammond was named the eighth president of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. When she takes office on July 1, she will be the first woman president in the 125-year history of the historically Black educational institution.

Dr. Jackson-Hammond is the former provost and vice president of academic affairs at Coppin State University in Baltimore. Previously, she was dean of the School of Education and Human Performance at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina and dean of the College of Education and Human Performance at Delaware State University. For the past year she has served as the lead consultant for higher education for H&H Educational Consultants.

“We are very excited about our selection,” said Gary Dowdell, chair of the Central State University board of trustees. “Dr. Hammond has a demonstrated leadership background and comes to Central State University at a time when we are poised to make great strides in building for the future.”

Dr. Jackson-Hammond is a graduate of Grambling State University. She holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a doctorate in education from Grambling.
