Four Black Scholars Who Are Assuming New Roles at Colleges and Universities

Richmond Wynn has been named vice president and chief diversity officer at the University of North Florida. An associate professor of public health, Dr. Wynn joined the university in 2000 and has held a number of roles including director of the Counseling Center since 2019, director of the master’s degree program in clinical mental health counseling in the Brooks College of Health, and interim coordinator of the LGBT Resource Center (now the LGBTQ Center).

Dr. Wynn received a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Florida. He holds a master’s degree in health from the University of North Florida specializing in addiction and mental health counseling.

Michelle Williams was promoted to associate vice president for research administration and executive director of operations for the Office of the Vice President for Research at the University of Connecticut. She joined the faculty at the university 20 years ago with appointments in the department of psychological sciences and the Institute of Africana Studies.

Dr. Williams is a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta. She earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Georgia.

Lisa Jones will be joining the department of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California San Diego on July 1. Her research focuses on structural proteomics using biochemical, analytical, and biophysical approaches to study protein interactions important in biological processes. She has been serving as an associate professor in the department of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

Dr. Jones holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Georgia State University.

Elena FitzPatrick Sifford was promoted to associate professor of art history at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She is also an affiliate faculty member with Africana studies, Latin American and Caribbean studies, and Italian studies.

Dr. Sifford is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, where she majored in art history and African American studies. She holds a Ph.D. in art history from the City University of New York.
