Refurbished African Art Gallery Opens at the University of Illinois

The Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois recently opened its renovated African Gallery. More than 70 items are now on display at the new gallery including items from the university’s collections and artwork on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, the University of Iowa, and the University of Wyoming.

The renovation included new flooring, lighting, and display cases. In addition, five iPads are mounted throughout the gallery that display videos featuring interviews with artists whose works are on display or other informational videos relating to the artwork shown.

We tried to use technology in ways that enhance the art, rather than compete with it,” explains Allyson Purpura, curator of African art at the museum.
