Two African American Men Named to Endowed Professorships

Byron Lars has been named the next Jane B. Nord Professor of Fashion Design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Lars began designing under his own label in 1991, initially with a small sportswear collection. He recently co-founded the neo-luxury women’s clothing brand IN EARNEST.

A native of Oakland, Lars completed a two-year fashion program at the Brooks Fashion Institute of Technology in Long Beach, California. He later studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York but did not earn a degree.

Michael Burton was named to a McDermott Professorship at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Burton Burton joined the faculty at the university as an assistant professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences in 2017. In 2019 was a founding member of the Center for Advanced Pain Studies. His research focuses on how the immune system communicates with the peripheral nervous system to regulate pain, reproductive physiology, and energy homeostasis.

Dr. Burton holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in animal science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
