Indiana University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chancellor, Indiana University South Bend. The Chancellor exercises broad responsibilities for all aspects of the academic, student, financial, development, and administrative dimensions of the campus, in coordination with Indiana University’s University Administration and the other Indiana University regional campuses. IU seeks an energetic, dynamic individual to lead and engage its faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community in what promises to be an exciting era for the institution and community. The position reports to the Vice President for Regional Campuses and Online Education, Ken Iwama who reports to IU President, Pamela Whitten.

Indiana University South Bend (IU South Bend) is the premier comprehensive public university dedicated to serving the needs of North Central Indiana and beyond. IU South Bend enrolls nearly 4,500 degree-seeking students, making it the largest of the regional campuses of Indiana University. IU South Bend is also the oldest regional campus, offering its first classes in 1916. Programs are offered at the undergraduate and graduate level on campus, online, and at a center in neighboring Elkhart. IU South Bend has 346 faculty, including 115 tenure/tenure track, 83 full-time non-tenure track, and 148 part-time faculty. IU South Bend also employs 247 talented and dedicated staff members who support the mission of the campus. IU South Bend also has a campus center in neighboring Elkhart and the Civil Rights Heritage Center, located in a neighborhood near campus. As a regional campus of Indiana University, students earn an IU degree, right where they live and work, in a small campus environment where they learn from distinguished professors, and all at an affordable price.

The Chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer of IU South Bend and reports to the Vice President of Regional Campuses and Online Education. The Chancellor works closely with the Vice President and senior administration of Indiana University. On the South Bend campus, the Chancellor’s senior administration team includes the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement, the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, the Vice Chancellor for University Relations and Advancement, the Chief Information Officer, and the Chief of Staff.

The Chancellor will lead IU South Bend in advancing its contributions to fulfilling the mission of Indiana University. In addition, the Chancellor will guide IU South Bend in commitments to excellence in teaching and scholarship, student-centeredness, service learning, and engaged citizenship. The Chancellor will provide strong leadership in achieving current goals and also establishing new and ambitious ones to move the campus forward.

The new Chancellor will demonstrate:

  • Deep understanding of and respect for academic values and the traditions of higher education, as well as the ability to grasp and manage the demands of the market and the new forces of technology that have an impact on all universities today.
  • Capacity to articulate a broad vision for the IU South Bend campus within Indiana University and among the Indiana University regional campuses, which will allow the campus to leverage the strengths of the university and build on its unique strengths and position. 
  • A record of commitment to and leadership in diversity and inclusion. 
  • Thorough understanding of the importance of strong enrollment management strategies in a highly competitive environment.
  • Ability to build support and marshal resources for various initiatives and to achieve goals through appropriate engagement with the campus community.
  • A commitment to and understanding of the importance of shared governance and shared decision-making.
  • Ability to lead fundraising efforts that will attract the external resources necessary not only in relation to the budget but also to achieve a higher level of institutional success.
  • Commitment to serving and advocating for students and to the establishment of a student-centered atmosphere with a focus on access, affordability, and student success.
  • Commitment to faculty and staff development.
  • Commitment to athletic programs and high-impact learning experiences for students.
  • Familiarity with the complexities of leading a regional campus within a university-wide system, and the ability both to serve the needs of the campus and region, and to work collaboratively with faculty, students, community, and the president and senior officers, as well as with other regional campuses.
  • Ability to connect with and collaborate with business and community leaders and understand regional relevance.
  • Commitment to offering a rich liberal arts education to the community served.
  • Commitment to advancing the IU South Bend mission as an engaged campus, including articulating views and values that build partnerships and collaboration with local and regional entities in the Michiana region.

  • Personal qualities include energy and creativity, leadership, integrity, selflessness, effective listening skills, negotiating skills, creative problem solving abilities, the ability to be decisive and yet respectful of the deliberative process, patience, humor, and trustworthiness.

Strong candidates will have a demonstrated record of leadership as an executive officer in a complex organization, preferably in higher education, including a passion for student success. A deep knowledge and understanding of the academic mission and fundraising are strongly preferred. Candidates should demonstrate strategic thinking and also possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, be collaborative and creative, and be able to articulate a vision to diverse audiences.

  • Terminal Degree.
  • Demonstrated progressive leadership experience.
  • Experience managing complex budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience working with external constituencies.
