New York University seeks a highly seasoned, thoughtful, and nimble administrator to serve as the Assistant Vice President for Equal Opportunity (AVP) and lead the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) and its team of more than twenty professionals. Situated in the Office of the President, the AVP provides leadership on matters involving Equal Opportunity (EO), Affirmative Action (AA), Title VII, Title IX, Title VI, ADA/504, other civil rights laws, and supervises administrators and staff in support of the University’s goals, programmatic offerings, and initiatives. The AVP partners with the Office of General Counsel, the Provost’s Office, the Office of Global Inclusion, the Office of Student Conduct, and Human Resources, and interfaces with the University’s schools, institutes, and administrative units, as well as faculty, staff, students, and administrators across the global network in support of the mission to play a leadership role both at NYU and in the broader higher education community in promoting diversity, cultural sensitivity, and equal opportunity in academic excellence, research, teaching, and service. The AVP will work with the Deans and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure that educational and enforcement efforts are coordinated across the University.
The Assistant Vice President serves as the focal point for strategic planning efforts to ensure that NYU complies with its non-discrimination, anti-harassment, sexual misconduct prevention, and equal opportunity obligations, as well as its affirmative action obligations. The AVP ensures that the entire University community has consistent, regular, and excellent trainings and programs related to its requirements, policies, resources, and offerings to meet these obligations and reduce non-compliance. The AVP and their staff handle discrimination, harassment/hostile environment, and sexual misconduct complaints in schools and departments to maximize physical and emotional safety and wellbeing and minimize disruptive behavior, negative effects on productivity, and the existence of hostile work or study environments. The AVP has individual and/or joint oversight for a range of university policies related to each of these areas.
The ideal candidate for Assistant Vice President will bring a strong record of administrative leadership and experience in equal opportunity, affirmative action, and civil rights laws, ideally in a higher education setting. Successful candidates will have demonstrated ability to work in a complex and highly decentralized institutional environment with a large and diverse array of stakeholders and partners, and in support of a seasoned team of professional staff. They will be highly communicative and accessible to students, faculty, staff, and administration across all NYU departments and global sites, and will possess a collaborative spirit and a willingness to engage thoughtfully in complex and divisive matters. The AVP will have a demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to, intersectional issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the broadest sense. The AVP should exhibit exceptional skills in communication and collaboration, team building and support, leadership, and organizational prioritization.
