University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Establishes New Research Center to Address Segregation in Local Area

The School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s College of Arts and Architecture has recently established the Center for Equity Practice and Planning Justice.

The new research hub aims to address the impact of racially segregated neighborhoods in Milwaukee – one of the most segregated cities in the United States. Scholars involved in the center’s initiatives plan to research the systemic patterns of segregation in Milwaukee and advance racially equitable practices in urban and regional planning.

The center will also provide resources for local organizations, government agencies and urban planners, as well as host public forums for community members to learn about topics such as zoning reforms and transportation justice.

Kirk Harris, associate professor of urban planning, will serve as the inaugural director of the Center for Equity Practice and Planning Justice.

“The unresolved effects of racial segregation continue to harm communities,” said Dr. Harris. “The work of the center is vital to developing solutions that address these systemic issues and foster sustainable, inclusive urban growth.”
